South Africa in a state of emergency, Archbishop

Cape Town , South Africa, 23 Oct-(ANA)- Aformer Anglican archbishop of Cape Town hasdescribed poverty in South Africa as being worse than ever.

Archbishop NjongonkuluNdungane said having met communities affected by poverty across the country South Africawas in "a state of emergency".

"The anger, thefrustration and the feeling of hopelessness especially among young people is arecipe for possible disaster," he said.

Official figures suggestaround 25% of South Africans are unemployed.

"In a country wherehuge amounts can be spent on [the 2010] soccer world cup or increasingsalaries, it is unthinkable that so many can go without food," thearchbishop said.(ANA)
