Ivory Coast jails two over pollution

Abidjan, 23 Oct-(ANA)- Acourt in Ivory Coast has sentenced two people to 20 years and five years injail for dumping hundreds of tonnes of toxic waste in the capital Abidjan in2006.

Seven others wereacquitted. The Dutch company that shipped the waste avoided prosecution bypaying the government a $200m (108m) out-of-court settlement.

The company, Trafigura,never admitted liability, saying the payment was made out of sympathy for theIvorian people.

Seventeen people died andthousands suffered breathing problems and nausea.

The Dutch multi-nationalfirm chartered the ship carrying the waste, which was unloaded in Ivory Coast, after a failure to agree deals toget it treated in the Netherlandsand Nigeria.

It said it had contracted alocal firm, Tommy, to handle the waste in good faith.(ANA)
