Sharia court arrests Nigerian with 86 wives

Abuja , 16Sept-(ANA)- A Nigerian man with 86 wives, Mohammadu BelloAbubakar, has been arrested by an Islamic court for refusing to divorce all butfour of them.


He was pickedup in a pre-dawn raid on his house in Bida, Niger state andcharged with "insulting religious creed" and "unlawfulmarriages".


A Sharia courtjudge denied him bail until another hearing on October 6.


Last week hewon a court injunction preventing authorities banishing him if he refused todivorce his wives.


Mr BelloAbubakar, an Islamic preacher, has more than 170 children.


Localtraditional rulers told him to divorce his wives by the end of August or beevicted from his home.


A court was dueto sit on Thursday to decide if the order violated his human rights.


Lawyers for MrBello Abubakar said he had not broken any law.


Mr Abubakarsays there is no punishment stated in the Koran for having more than fourwives.


Niger is one of theMuslim majority states to have reintroduced Sharia punishments since 2000.


Several peoplehave been sentenced to death for adultery by Sharia courts but none of thesesentences have been carried out.


Muslim scholarsagree that it is allowed in Islam to have up to four wives, as long as youtreat them equally. (ANA)
